TB Champion Stories

Real voices. Real journeys. The courage of those who faced TB and chose to speak up.

Stories That Move Mountains

Behind every statistic is a person. These are the stories of TB Champions — survivors, advocates, and change-makers — who are breaking barriers every day.

Karin Husselmann

TB Survivor & Founder

Karin Husselmann

Windhoek, Namibia

Diagnosed with TB and faced with stigma from her own community, Karin refused to be silenced. Her journey from patient to founder of the TB Free Foundation is a testament to the power of turning personal pain into purpose. 'I want no one to walk the road I walked alone,' she says.

"TB does not define you. Your response to it does."
Ester N.

TB Champion & Community Educator

Ester N.

Oshakati, Namibia

Ester was diagnosed with TB at 28 while caring for her young children. After completing treatment, she became one of our most passionate community educators, visiting households across the Oshana region to spread awareness and reduce stigma.

"I saw how fear stops people from getting tested. I had to help change that."
Johannes K.

MDR-TB Survivor

Johannes K.

Katutura, Windhoek

Johannes battled drug-resistant TB for nearly two years, enduring a gruelling treatment regimen. With support from the TB Free Foundation, he stayed the course and today mentors others going through the same difficult journey.

"The treatment is hard. The support made it possible."
Maria T.

Youth TB Ambassador

Maria T.

Rundu, Namibia

At just 19, Maria contracted TB and watched her studies grind to a halt. She used her recovery period to write about her experience, sparking open conversations in her school and community that reached hundreds of young people.

"Young people need to hear stories like mine — so they know getting help is brave, not shameful."
Simon P.

TB/HIV Co-Infection Survivor

Simon P.

Katima Mulilo, Namibia

Living with both HIV and TB, Simon faced a double burden — medically and socially. The integrated support he received helped him adhere to both treatment regimens. He now speaks publicly about the importance of combined HIV/TB services.

"Two diseases, one voice. I will keep speaking up."
Anna-Marie V.

Healthcare Worker & TB Champion

Anna-Marie V.

Swakopmund, Namibia

Anna-Marie contracted TB on the job as a nurse. Her experience transformed how she approaches patient care — with deeper empathy, patience, and understanding. She now trains other healthcare workers on reducing TB stigma in clinical settings.

"When healthcare workers understand TB from the inside, everything changes."
